Allergy is a reaction of immune system to substances which are mostly harmless to the majority of the population. These substances are guilty to form allergies in most of the people. Some people are allergic to foods too. The food allergies kill 150 people per year only in the USA and hence it’s not a thing to laugh and leave. It’s a serious problem. Around 4 million of the total American population suffers from food allergies. Food allergies should not be confused with food intolerance as they both have different symptoms. Food allergies come with symptoms like breathing difficulties, hives, vomiting, asthma and even deaths while food intolerance comes with symptoms like gas and bloated feeling.
Which foods cause allergies? Foods like milk, peanuts, fish, wheat and soy can result into allergies in children while shellfish, walnuts, eggs, etc. can bring about allergies in adults. Food allergies are so severe that sometimes even at the smell of the foods, people react to it. So, it is the need of the day to deal with food allergies. However, it’s difficult to deal with food allergies. Prevention can be the best advice in case you are suffering from any food allergy. Keep away from the food to which you are allergic to. If you are not sure that you are allergic to some food, then get it checked with your doctor. Then avoid coming in contact with such foods. Sounds easy right? But it is difficult to keep away from such foods as even processed foods contain ingredients which may contain the food which you are allergic to. Always go through the food labeling to ensure that you do not come in contact with the food you are allergic to.
For children, it is almost difficult to monitor as to what they eat. Parents need to be vigilant as to what their children eat and should inform the authorities in the school about their child’s allergies. Neighbors and friends should also be informed about their condition. By doing these things you can ensure that your child is safe. Hence prevention is the only way one can deal with food allergies.
